The Norrona – Faore Islands and Iceland by sea

I have had the Faroe Islands on my to-do list for a while, but never really managed to find a proper slot for a visit. Last year, while checking out Iceland as a possible destination for this Summer holidays, I found out by chance that it is possible to reach it via ferry from Denmark with a stop in Torshavn, Faroe Islands. It took me a minute to decide that the holiday plan would revolve around that ferry, the Norrona.

The Norrona is a nice ferry connecting Hirtshals in Denmark with Torshavn, its home port in the Faroe Islands, and Seydisfjordur in East Iceland. The trip takes about 2 days in the North Atlantic, which may be rough at times, but it is usually pleasant during the Summer months. It’s a little pricey for a ferry, like everything else in Northern Europe, but if a visit to the Faroe Islands is included in the plan, it is absolutely worth it.

Since the Norrona is going to Iceland once per week, it was also “easy” to decide how much time to spend on both locations: one week in the Faroe Islands, two weeks in Iceland. Taking the ferry also meant I was going to use my car for the whole trip, which was a plus for a lot of reasons, so I only had to decide how to reach Denmark by car to finalize my Summer trip.
Considering departure and arrival times in Denmark of the Norrona, I decided for a stop in Germany along the way at the beginning and the end of the trip visiting the area around Hamburg and Hannover, with a focus on Lubeck and Luneburg. North Germany has a lot of nice places and both towns are well worth a visit, so it was a really good choice. Unfortunately I could not spend too much time in the area considering the whole trip was already taking an entire month.
